Martin and I had a blast last night!
But let me back up and give you some background on the situation. There are four residents that currently live in Molly's house. Two have terminal cancer. The most severe cases get moved out of the group homes and to Molly's house for special care. One of the residents is Kim Soo-Hee (she's not terminally ill). She has sort of become one of me and Martin's favorites. She has learned our names - "Martin" and "Mel" and asks for us often. She will be 32 next month, but she has the mental abilities of about 6-years-old.
Molly took her to get her hair permed, but the hairdresser said Soo-Hee's hair was too short. Soo-Hee was disappointed, so I bought her some bows for her hair. She is definitely a girly-girl!
But don't let that sweet face fool you! she can be pretty sneaky. She apparently told several volunteers that she didn't know where her watch was? and she ended up with three new watches!
So anyway, Soo Hee has been spoiled quite a bit since Martin and I arrived.
Soon we met Archie. He likes to be called by his English name instead of his Korean name. He was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. He's very quiet and likes to keep to himself in his room watching t.v. most days. Martin and I knew right away he has a very kind heart. He is very patient with us, regardless of how he might be feeling.
Last night it dawned on me that we have been showering Soo Hee with attention and little gifts, but have done nothing for Archie. I called Molly into the living room and asked her if there was something that Archie would like? maybe to cheer him up? He hasn't been feeling well lately, and hasn't been eating with us for a few days. Molly suggested maybe some movies since he likes to keep to himself and watch t.v. in his room. We tried to see if the portable DVD player they had in the house would work? it didn't...and the movies they had in the house were pretty old and already been watched several times.
Without skipping a beat, Martin and I looked at eachother and smiled and said, "E-Mart!" So Molly let us take the Holt vehicle down to E-Mart, and we bought Archie a brand new DVD player and some movies! Martin and I had so much fun!! We picked action looking Korean movies ("boy movies" as I like to call them), to hold him over till we could find out what kind of movies he likes!
When we got back to the house, Molly took us into Archie's room and explained to him what we had done for him. He smiled (the first smile we've ever seen on him), and he said, "thank-you." Martin hooked up the DVD player to his t.v. and I unwrapped the movies, and put the batteries in his new remote. Esther came into the room to see Archie's new DVD player, so I had her ask him what kind of movies does he like? Archie exclaimed he liked scary movies, and action movies...BUT NOT LOVE STORIES! I laughed and had Esther tell him we wouldn't think of buying him any love story movies!
I cannot tell you how much fun it was doing something for Archie. Martin and I were on cloud 9 all night after that! We high fived eachother and talked about how we made a good team!
Wonderful story -- thanks for posting this it really touched my heart. You and Martin are awesome!
