INTRODUCTION TO RESIDENTS

We literally interact with hundreds of residents....to remember all their names is virtually impossible for any of us volunteers.  We're all bad with remembering names...but to try and remember Korean names makes it even more difficult.

We love these residents like they're our brother's and sister's.  So understand, when we give them our own "nicknames" it's not to humiliate, or tease them...we mean it endearingly, because it's who they are and how we got to know them.

This is our "puzzle man"  - on days we have to be inside, due to weather conditions; we will color or put together puzzles.  This man will methodically look at each puzzle piece, then choose one and put it EXACTLY where it's suppose to go on the first try.  He will do this for the entire puzzle.

This is "puzzle man" with "ice cream boy"  - they are both in the Hope Home.  Ice cream boy LOVES when we take them down to the store for ice cream and cola.  He knows Martin and will always ask Martin for ice cream and cola.  When we're deciding whether or not to take them, we have to spell
"i-c-e  c-r-e-a-m" out so he doesn't catch on...

This is our "block boy" - he's autistic, and will often carry a blue wood block.  We think his house mother may have taken it away from him...but he'll often find something else he'll hold for several days at a time.

This gal is "the pincher" - Martin unfortunately found out the hard way.  She got a pinch of his neck and wouldn't let go...now when we interact with her, we hold her thumbs so she can't pinch us.

This is our "harmonica girl" - well...no need to explain...but she will hear a song being played and can play her harmonica right along with the song!

This is "beautiful woman" - she knows two phrases in English: "good morning" and "you are beautiful!"

This lady used to have REALLY curly hair - sort of in an afro style, so we called her "curly" - but then one day, suddenly all her curls were GONE! But we still know her as "curly girl."

We call him "rico suave" - he always is dressing as fancy as he can, sunglasses (he has several pairs) and all.

He is "the enforcer" - he'll often hang-out down by the front gate of Ilsan Town. Next door is a small nursery that sells plants and flowers.  People will park in front of our gate, and sometimes block the entrance.  He will go and find those people in the nursery and get them to move their cars.  He's very adamant about keeping our entrance clear.

This is one of the wonderful women in the Barbara Home.  She will repeat most everything you say in English, and quite well.  We call her our "hello-how are you?" gal. She'll repeat that phrase really well!

This is our "happy gal" - she is always giggling, hugging, smiling and generally a very happy girl! I thought she was going to blow a gasket when I gave her that head band she's wearing. She was so excited! She used to wear this Hello Kitty one that was pretty worn out, so I bought her a new one...which she now wears EVERYDAY.

This guy is our "non-resident...but a resident" guy.  He looks like he wouldn't be a resident, until you watch him and interact with him.  He helps take care of the younger residents.  He's autistic and likes to spend a lot of free time alone, or you'll see him just sitting alone and watching things...

And those are few of our favorite residents!
